10 Year Old Shoes

There was a lot of leg lifting at Squam.  Everyone wanted to see the shoes on somebody and not just sitting on a shelf.  Thank goodness for leggings, because from behind our table, the only way to show mine off was to lift my foot up, dress and all.  I was wearing these, my warm weather favorites.

I bought these shoes in 2002 when I was waitressing and needed a pair of comfortable black shoes to adhere to the restaurant's dress code.  Believe me when I say that they've had a lot of foot traffic.  In the 10 years I've owned these shoes, they've seen me through waitressing jobs, a teaching job, a job at a local college, and several years of mothering.  Now they're about to take me back to the classroom in the fall.

Good quality leather gets better with age.  I wonder how they'll look after another 10?

What about you - how long have you been wearing your Auroras?

  1. mine went strong for almost 15 years (bought them in high school!) and unfortunately the dog got to them. if he hadn't gotten his teeth into them, i bet they would still be going strong :)

    1. Dogs... If you order another pair, let us know and we'll send some leather scrap as a decoy! I had a pair of wool clogs once that were destroyed by my friend's puppy. They were perfect and I never did replace them.

  2. My first pair lasted five years (and died during hospital residency when I literally walked through the bottoms and the leather in the toe wore through. That was a LOT of walking, that year).

My second pair (bought a year after the first) has lasted 13 years so far, and my third and fourth pairs are 3 years old.

    1. Yikes! That reminds me of a pair (or two) that Dave literally grew out of in high school. Glad that your first pair wasn't your last!

    1. I know, they're not exactly an impulse buy. BUT, the best things rarely are... :)

  4. The mail lady brought me a pair just like that yesterday! I really hope they last me 10 years, because I absolutely LOVE them.

This brings my total to... five pairs of Auroras. Hopefully by rotating them I can keep them all going strong for many, many years :)

    1. Thanks for sharing -that's great. It sounds like you have as many pairs as I do! I try to keep mine rotating, but have to say that I get the most wear out of my brown middle english and my black new chinese (in the photos). I'm not gentle on my shoes at all, and they're holding strong. I have one pair that is ready for a resole but the rest are still years away from that.

  5. I got my first pair just this year, but have to tell you they are my most favorite shoes I have ever owned [and I've owned a LOT]. I have brown Chinese right now, but really think I need a black pair too! Thanks for being so awesome!
